Vintage Plycraft Norman Cherner Pretzel Dining Arm Chair

Paul Goldman founded Plycraft in Lawrence, Massachusetts, in 1953 — he had secured military contracts for the manufacturing of bentwood products during World War II and was able to move into the commercial market thereafter. This chair was designed by Norman Cherner. He was an architect, designer, and professor. He explored postwar technological innovations and how to incorporate them into furniture production and architecture. His Cherner chair is one of the most successful examples of mid-century modern molded plywood seating. It was based on an original chair designed by John F. Pile. The Cherner Chair was a more cost-effective version of Pile's chair.
