Ideas for Creating Comfortable & Stylish Outdoor Spaces

Due to worldwide health concerns over the past year and half, we have been given the opportunity to slow down the pace of life and remain in our homes/apartments/condos/ living areas for extended periods of time. This change in daily living habits and locations has made us take a good look at the functionality and enjoyment we get out of our living spaces.

DEFINITION: From increased life at home, a rise in what is called ‘indoor/outdoor living’, which is simply defined as extending the comforts and practicality of indoor living to the outside, exploded. The main goal is to enhance the outdoor living space so it is an area that is enjoyable to spend time in, socialize in, and entertain in. When designing the outdoor extension of your interior home, consider continuing themes, using the same flooring, and/or similar furniture to keep the flow from inside to outside seamless.

Indoor Outdoor Living

BENEFITS of indoor/outdoor living include:

  • Additional actual square footage of living space.
  • The function of indoor home living with no real building requirements.
  • An affordable way to increase home value, which is ideal in today’s booming housing market.
  • Reduces stress!

This last one is truly the most important. It’s been proven again and again (not that we need any studies to tell us nature is wonderful!) that spending time outside in nature is extremely beneficial for your health. But for proof, this NIH study showed that incorporating indoor/outdoor living in your home can decrease stress hormones in your body.

IDEAS for your outdoor living space:

  • A dining room
  • Lounge areas with added fireplace or fire pit
  • Outdoor kitchens
  • Pool or spa
  • Sunroom- A sunroom is the middle ground in indoor/outdoor living. Also referred to as solariums or patio rooms, sunrooms are enclosed rooms with either all glass windows or screening. This allows you to enjoy the outdoor feeling and benefits without being completely exposed to all the elements. This is a year-round space that can be enjoyed in all seasons of weather.

HOW TO ENTERTAIN & WHAT YOU NEED

Outdoor entertaining is the perfect way to get away from the world of electronics and enjoy the vitality and rejuvenating features of being in nature. The spaciousness of the outdoors allows you to socialize in comfort, taking advantage of fresh air and distancing requirements. Utilizing the outside space absolutely allows you to accommodate more guests than would a gathering indoors.

Appliances, Features, Accoutrements to consider:

  • Countertops
  • Fireplaces and fire pits
  • Kitchen appliances & utensils
  • Patio furniture: couches, chairs, sofas, side tables, ottomans, & pillows
  • Pizza ovens
  • Premium grills
  • Sinks
  • Sliding glass doors if you want to access your inside kitchen instead
  • TV viewing areas
